Experience Ischia: a journey through the island's wineries, flavors, and traditions

Ischia is more than just sea: it's a volcanic island where the land tells ancient stories through wine, cellars carved into the tuff, and a vibrant rural culture. Among terraced slopes overlooking the Mediterranean, native grape varieties, and traditions passed down through generations, here the journey becomes a sensory experience of scents, silence, and authentic flavors.

An island of wine and identity
In the heart of Ischia, viticulture has ancient roots. The Greeks were among the first to cultivate vines on these fertile lands, giving rise to a tradition that lives on today in the glasses of Biancolella, Forastera, and Piedirosso. The vines climb the hills of Mount Epomeo, offering spectacular views and mineral wines, influenced by the volcanic soil and sea breezes.

Day 1: Forio and the Vineyards by the Sea
Start from Forio, where the landscape is a mosaic of rows of vines and glimpses of the sea. Here you can visit historic wineries like Cantine Pietratorcia, perfect for a tasting immersed in nature, enjoying organic wines and local cuisine.
Don't miss: a glass of Biancolella at sunset.

Day 2: Serrara Fontana and the Rock-Dug Cellars
Move to Serrara Fontana, the most authentic and rural part of the island. Here, the cellars are true natural caves, carved into the tuff. An iconic stop is Cantina del Nonno, where time seems to have stood still.
Experience: Simple yet intense tastings, accompanied by homemade bread, Ischia-style rabbit, and vegetables from the garden.

Day 3: Barano and Rural Tradition
A special day among vineyards, stories, and nature at the Tenuta del Cannavale bio-zone,
where you can discover up close the work of a small winery that produces natural wine with passion and respect for the land. The vineyard, accessible on foot from Fiaiano, is lovingly tended by Anna and Gennaro, sister and brother, who pour their heart and soul into every row.
And while the wine speaks of the land, Signora Carmela collects "tuns e paparastiell" (peas and paparastiell) to prepare the soup, reminding us that "the saranguonglie,
the muss e purciell, the recchie, the coniglie, the suffione, and the ruscagn are miraculous herbs for the liver" and that
the rural tradition is made of simple gestures and authentic flavors.

Day 4: Campagnano and heroic viticulture
The visit begins in the small village of Campagnano, at the foot of Monte Vezzi, where the winery is located. Here, you immediately enter the island's rural side: terraced vineyards, ancient paths, and a family tradition dating back to 1940.
The tour continues with a walk through the Biancolella and Forastera vineyards, cultivated on steep slopes overlooking the sea. This is the heart of so-called "heroic viticulture": rows accessible only on foot, exposed to the sun and wind, with spectacular views of the Gulf of Naples.
From the vineyards, you descend to the cellars, carved into the tuff rock. Here, you discover the traditional production process: manual harvesting, pressing, and aging in natural environments that maintain ideal conditions.
A unique element is the transport of wine: historically, the must and bottles were (and in part still are) transported by sea in small boats from the bay to Ischia Ponte. This passage illustrates the strong connection between wine production and the island's maritime heritage.
The tour concludes with a tasting in the cellar: fresh, mineral wines, a direct expression of the terroir, accompanied by local products and stories from the Mazzella family.

Day 5: Lacco Ameno: A Meeting of Wine and Archaeology
The itinerary at Tenute Tommasone begins among the vineyards on the island's hills, where you can discover the native grape varieties and the volcanic landscape. It continues with a visit to the modern winery, where tradition and innovation meet, and concludes with a wine tasting accompanied by typical local products.
Cultural highlight: visit to the Pithecusae Archaeological Museum.

Day 6: Tenuta Calitto and Palazzo Piromallo
At Tenuta Calitto, the journey becomes discovery, emotion, and connection with the true soul of the island of Ischia. Surrounded by centuries-old vineyards, breathtaking landscapes, and relaxing atmospheres, the estate offers a range of experiences designed for those who want to experience the area in an authentic and sensorial way.
From tasting native wines to guided tours of the vineyards, to moments of relaxation in our spa surrounded by greenery, every activity is an invitation to slow down and enjoy the simple and profound beauty of nature.
There's no shortage of convivial moments, such as a picnic on the estate, which will transform the itinerary into a special memory.

Why choose Ischia for a wine tour?
Ischia offers something rare: slow, authentic tourism, far from the beaten track. Here, wine isn't just about tasting, but about the story of the land, meeting those who live it every day.
It's a journey made of small gestures: a shared glass, a cool cellar carved into the rock, the scent of the Mediterranean scrub. And it's precisely there, between tradition and simplicity, that Ischia reveals its truest soul.
